Flood Alert issued on 13 Feb 2023 09:33
River Ems
Very little rainfall has been recorded since 17 January 2023. Groundwater continues to fall at our indicator borehole in Compton. However, groundwater is still expected to be close to the surface in the communities of Stoughton and Walderton, and only falling by a few centimetres each day. Springs and minimal flooding will affect fields, the village green Stoughton, and rural roads including Stoughton main road and the road from East Marden. The week ahead should remain predominantly dry, although 5mm of rain is currently forecast on Thursday 16/02/2023. The volume of water flowing along roads will continue to reduce. Some more periods of unsettled weather are possible through late February and early March. Details are very uncertain, but so long as we do not receive extremely wet weather, groundwater is expected to continue to fall. However, long term weather forecasting is difficult. We will continue to monitor levels and forecasts. If you have pumps to help manage water levels in basements, please ensure they are operational. We will update this message by 17:00 20/02/2023.

River Ems
We have already measured more than the average monthly rainfall in January 2023. Groundwater levels are very close to the surface. Minor groundwater flood impacts are expected to continue, with springs and minor flooding affecting fields, the village green Stoughton, and rural roads including Stoughton main road, the road from East Marden and also between Cooks Lane and The Barley Mow, and the B2146 near Woodlands Lane, in Walderton. However, with no rain since 16/01/2023, groundwater at our indicator borehole in Compton has started to slowly fall, by about 20 centimetres each day. No rain is currently forecast in the week ahead. Groundwater levels in Stoughton and Walderton should stabilise this week, but will remain close to the surface. Long term weather forecasting is difficult, but rain could return from mid February, which could extend or cause the return of groundwater flood impacts. We will continue to monitor levels and forecasts. If you have pumps to help manage water levels in basements, please ensure they are operational. We will update this message by 17:00 30/01/2023.

No rain is currently forecast in the week ahead. Settled weather could continue until 23/01/2023. However, groundwater will continue to rise and groundwater flood impacts will likely increase over the coming week, maybe the next fortnight. By 23/01/2023, groundwater levels could be only a few metres below the peak of February 2014. With groundwater now so high, and little capacity in the soil, the next time it rains, even more water could flow along the roads. We will continue to monitor levels and forecasts. If you have pumps to help manage water levels in basements, please ensure they are operational. We will update this message by 17:00 23/01/2023.
